Obsession
Textbook definition of what not to do if you have a crush 🥀
———Review———
The movie unraveled really slowly for me. For most of the runtime, i thought it was just something overhyped with a bit of great horror. Then came the car scene near the end and it clicked. That's when i understood why people have been raving about this film. I still think it's slightly overrated but dammit, the movie surprised me.
The film is basically Bear living through the nightmare of his own making. Snapping the One Wish Willow made Nikki go crazy and the horror she made us and Bear go through wasn't actually her. Bear's own inability to confess to Nikki when she originally asked, led to the whole mess to begin with.
Even later on, when the real Nikki confronts Bear and asks him to kill her, we get to see how selfish Bear really is. He tries to make the wish work despite all the crazy stuff happening and coldly ignores her.
The worst person in this movie was the protagonist.
The film does a great job with Nikki making the viewer VERY uncomfortable while also knowing that it really isn't her. It makes you feel scared and unnerved, but at the same time, you also feel bad for her.
The performances were pretty damn good too. Nikki's weird flip-flopping personality was well executed, and Bear's genuine reactions to it all made it work really well.
I'd say the highlight scenes were:
When Bear woke up at night to see Nikki watching him sleep and then spiraling into hysteria. It made me think of Hereditary.
The "What's the verdict: Cat?" twist scene. It was admittedly pretty clever and got me.
And of course, the car scene, where Bear and Sarah's lovely chat was ruined, to say the least.
The film carried some level of camp and corniness in its writing and dialogue, which i hated during the first 15 minutes when it was most prevalent. Though, the dialogue at the workplace the day after Bear snapped the One Wish Willow was very natural and great.
Even with all those great moments, some of the scenes intended to be scary just made me laugh. And unfortunately, i saw the ending from a mile away. The movie as a whole just felt a bit jumbled.
In conclusion: GOOD.
