The Devils
The Devils is undeniably transgressive and blasphemous, and that is also what makes it such a provocative masterpiece.
I also kept thinking about how strange faith itself can be. Putting so much devotion and hope into something you cannot physically see. You feel it. You sense it. You believe something is there… or maybe you just want it to be there. The film keeps blurring the line between faith and obsession. Belief, fear, and righteousness become so consuming that they start to overpower reality itself.
And even though the film is set in 1634, many of its themes still feel relevant today. Religion and morality are still used to justify discrimination, control, and public shame. People also use religion for profit and personal gain. Political systems still rely on fear and scapegoats to maintain power. Society still struggles with repression, guilt, and the policing of sexuality.
