Them! (1954) Is better in every way. Yvette Vickers has some special stardom in this and is acting circles around everyone else

Essential Em Canon Viewing. * “If Re-Animator was a homo sapien, The Brain That Would Not Die was it’s neanderthal ancestor.”* -quote I said, mid way through the movie, that Jared informed me has to go in my Letterboxd review. The physical comedy of this movie is so much fun, holy shit. The placement of the roman busts throughout the laboratory, the genuine monotone by the main doctor, the under-complicated electricity/blood/serum set up. It doesn’t get better than this. (Except it does. With Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator) Also - maybe feminist critique? Not clear if it’s done on purpose, but wholly interesting. I feel there is untapped potential for a female victim of a Frankensteinian crime and her bitter feelings towards being alive and now “grotesque”. I'm so glad that this movie hones in on it, her revenge, and the complicated feelings of being forced to live.

very fun, entertaining, with gorgeous *ship in a bottle *sets, and it was still toooooooo long. Gosling does so good with the physicality necessary for the role, especially since he’s acting by himself for a majority of scenes. Andy Weir stories love putting a guy in isolation in space. I’m a huge fan of the physical sets used, making everything tactile and grounded (useful in a space movie tbh). Loved the little alien guy. Ok, also can I say this story needs some humanity (ha) academia involved. Can we take a moment to talk about alien language syntax, or intonation, or morphology? No? Okay, 15 more math equations. Fair enough. Too many “rising action” to “climax” moments. After the third “oh god we’re all gonna die” it starts to feel cheapened. Add on the nearly 3 hours of runtime, and I feel like, as the audience, I’m being dragged around to beat a dead horse. If this movie came out in 2015, teenage me would be obsessed with it. Obsessed. I honor her in my 4 stars 🫡.
