Sentimental Value
Sentimental Value was one of my most anticipated films of the year, and it didn’t disappoint. A nuanced, layered story about generational trauma, family, translating pain into art, and emotional growth.
The story is mostly focused on Nora and Gustav, but in my opinion the house is a core character here. The old family home carries both happy and tragic memories, and despite many renovations, it still has its cracks. Simply beautiful.
Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, and Elle Fanning decided to have an acting Olympics. No less.
It’s an incredibly melancholic and touching piece of cinema – but not without its fun moments. I mean, imagine receiving The Piano Teacher and Irréversible on DVD from your gramps on your birthday.
A lovely film.
