Groundhog Day
I wrote this for my english class after we watched this movie. I belived phil learned nothing in the end.
prompt - What moral or lesson do you think the filmmakers were trying to get across to the audience? Do you think they were successful.
The filmmakers in the movie groundhog's day were trying to show the consequences of lying and how that affects relationships in one's life. Phil, the main character, gets stuck in a time loop of the same day, which is supposed to teach him about being a bad person. Phil has a huge ego and is very rude to the people around him including his co workers. By putting him in this time loop it forces Phil to look at himself deeply and think about his actions. Even though that is what the filmmakers wanted to get across, I believe that this wasn't done well. For the majority of the movie we just see how Phil uses lying to get what he wants. He has infinite time to do whatever so he spends that time lying to have sex with women, stealing money and much more. But the thing is it's not like he learned from all this stuff and realized his errors no he got bored of having sex and doing whatever he wanted. So then he decides to go after the one woman he can't have, which is his co-worker Rita. Then for the next half of the movie we watch Phil lie to Rita over and over, trying to win her over. He pretends to like all these things she likes french poetry or her favorite drink. But he only knows this because he keeps having all this time to learn this stuff about her. Then when the loop starts over again Phil lies pretending he already knew that stuff about her. But Rita never ends up getting with Phil at the end of the day, it always goes wrong. So Phil gives up on pursuing Rita. Then this is supposed to be phils turning point where he realizes his mistakes. But he doesn't, instead he uses his lies for real. For example Rita said she wanted a man who can play an instrument so then phil said he could play the piano. But in reality Phil actually couldn't play the piano. After all the rejection from Rita he then learned the piano. Another example is Rita saying she wants a good man, someone kind and humble. Then again after all the rejection and spending the entire movie hating the people off this town. He goes from place to place at all these “accidents”and is helping the townspeople out. So when Rita comes to see him at the groundhogs party all these people are talking about how he is such a wonderful person. Then in the end Rita ends up kissing him which lifts the curse and he can live happily with her. Except one thing PHIL LEARNED NOTHING. He spent the entire movie lying and cheating to get his way and that is exactly what he did in the end. He only helped those people because he knew it would look good infront of Rita because he only decides to help these people after she rejected him. Also their whole relationship is a lie this isn't the real phil he just created himself to be the exact type rita would want. So he used all the knowledge he learned earlier about her to lie about truly knowing her. So in my opinion the message was clearly lost because Phil never learned that lying was bad, he ultimately used his lies in a “good way” which makes him a good person? That is the message I get from the movie.
READ TOO: I really really loved this movie. Between the acting and it being set during christmas. The repetion wasn’t boring and the movie was so funny while being heartfelt. Overall but i just thought about this
