A Single Man
I think probably one of my favorite (and most obvious) things about this movie is the coloring. The darker, grayer, colors represent his depression, the loneliness George feels. But we see him have small moments of peace, “clarity”, where things are brighter. He sees hope and life in these moments, even if they don’t last for long.
The drowning feeling he somehow cannot escape in the beginning. The things he dreads every time. Drowning in a complete darkness. But when he’s drowning again, there’s a light he can swim to. A light he can find in things that can help wake him up.
“I had Jim.”
“No, I mean a real relationship.”
Queer relationships are such a fragile thing. 16 years together can be gone in a blink of an eye, death is in all of our futures, even if we try and deny it. This movie really stood out to me, because of George’s character and how his depression I can see somewhat in mine.
Phenomenal piece for me.
