Constantine
Next time I get exorcised I wanna Keanu Reeves to do it.
A films full of manichaeism and controversy; and sarcasm. Contrasting and melancholic aesthetics. Beautiful iconography and decent camera work. Breathtaking performances. I don't really like religious propagandas in movies, however this movie managed to make something interesting within this context. A horror, and really dramatic film, with a little dystopian sci-fy atmosphere, that incorporated mythology into its core and made a brilliant thing out of this mixture. One of the greatest supernatural thrillers of all time.
"Constantine" was such an inspirational movie. It gave me many ideas for potential suicide attempts; throwing myself in a divine pool, cutting my wrists with broken hospital glass, smoking... the list goes on. Anyway, I can't even believe i'm stating this in a public platform, but if you're wondering, yes i've been exorcised, not only once, TWICE. Did the exorcism sessions worked? Or course not. Am I possessed by a demon? Of course not. However, my family believes I am possessed; I'm not possessed, I'm just depressed.
"What if I told you that God and the devil made a wager, a kind of standing bet for the souls of all mankind?"
This movie, beyond it's impressive interpretation of the human condition and their beliefs, has a really interesting point of view concerning mental illness. It makes them go through a devilish process of mythical justification, but it doesn't denies it, or make it less impactful. It questions whether the divine law is actually fair, as it is claimed to be. Suicide might be a sin, but not every suicidal person must go to Hell. Thank God, I think I'm safe. I am an atheist btw, I don't believe in any God, I only believe in the peoples faith, though I do not agree with their blind idolatry. They pray, pray, pray and pray. Are they sure who are they praying for? They should be more careful. There is a really thin line between the divine and the devilish. The evil follows the good, wherever it goes. One cannot acknowledge the existence of God without also acknowledging it's opposite force, Satan. Where God builds a church, the Devil will build a chapel. Humanity can't exactly point out who's the good and who's the evil one. Are they two different entities? Is there a good God? Fortunately I can't answer these questions. But, personally, If the big man indeed existed, I don't think he's the coolest dude ever. The world is an awful place, filled with wars, diseases, assassins... the list goes on and on. It's like Hell is empty, and the demons are living within us. Why has "God" forsaken so many of us? Why has "God" created so many horrible creatures (aka men)?
My theory is that God created men and then sent Keanu Reeves as an apology. That man is so fucking hot it burns. That man is so hot his flames crawl through my body making me scream in pure agony. It's torture. And everybody knows I love pain. I wish Keanu Reeves was there praying for me while I was being exorcised. I wish he was there holding my hand while the demons came out of my body. I dedicate my imminent suicide to John Constantine, Johny boy, John Wick, Mr. Keanu Reeves.
Also, shoutout to Tilda Swinton as a non-binary mf Angel!!
