If I were to ever write a full essay on a movie it would be this one.
The cast is absolutely incredible, I believe the score is so underrated. The reason why this movie is so good to me is the amazing character work and also that amazing ending. These are my simple things for why this movie is so good. I want to some up the parallels I noticed while watching and I loved it.
Two sides of the same coin
I really picked up on this after the coffee shop scene. You have De Niro who is trying to keep his crew together as he starts a love story, Al Pacino plays a lead cop that has a struggling marriage and a depressed daughter. At the dinner they both understand not only who they are as people but also respect each other in a friendly way. The final 30 minutes truly displays this as De Niro leaves the women of his dreams to “return” to the only thing he’s really ever known meanwhile Al Pacino continues to chase him after leaving the hospital away from his dying child and his wife. They both desire and chase different things but it’s the only thing they have ever known therefore they keep coming back to it, and they discuss this at the diner. This not only makes these two characters amazing but also provides for incredible storytelling to be displayed. I could not stop thinking of this once I picked up on it and I love it.
The heist scenes and the cinematography are amazing but I haven’t scene a action/heist movie with this level of plot threads and character work as strong as this. Yes the shootout scenes are incredible and the tension throughout is incredible as well just like the acting but Heat shines in its ability to come off as a slow burn while having action scenes every 25 minutes. There were a few scenes that were not needed but honestly I can’t think of anything else I dislike.
I wish I had the ability to write in depth essays and maybe I will come back to this and add stuff but I am so glad I stayed up late to watch this. Incredible stuff from Micheal Mann.
