Hereditary
This was unsettling as fuck.
One thing I loved is that this movie made you feel something emotionally and you were, or at least felt, connected to the characters, to the point where you do care about their fate. Point is, it wasn't your average generic horror slop which relied on jumpscares.
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of Ari Aster in general but the "bizarreness" his work posseses actually works well in supernatural horror. There were so many subtle hints thrown around too lmao like the decapitated pigeon and the lessons in school.
Similarly most of the shots that would've or could've been "jumpscares" were executed in such a non chalant fashion which actually worked well, Annie perched on the wall corner is probably a good example of what I mean.
Toni Collette got a lot of praise for her role and deservedly so, the dinner table scene and the whole third act was fucking amazing, felt reminiscent to Shelly Duvey from The Shining. I believe Alex Wolff was just as good too, he did a fantastic job portraying a helpless child stuck in a teenagers body and the dream sequence gave me chills all over.
Possibly one of the best horror movies I've watched
