Memento
Christopher Nolan is incredible.
Memento is an incredible film with every single small and minute detail mattering which keeps you on your toes pouncing from theory to theory attempting to understand what on earth is happening at the same time as Leonard does ultimately leaving it near impossible to figure it out before he does all while being so close to figuring it out making the whole film feel like a prolonged dopamine hit.
The concept as a whole feels simple enough- guy can’t remember things, his wife is dead and he wants to figure out why- until you realise it’s split into different times one moving forward the other backwards constantly flipping between the two while fading in and out of consciousness.
The film has an underlying battle of Truth vs comfort however, as Leonard doesn’t want answers but instead a purpose, which is taken advantage of similar to the way that Nolan takes advantage of us throughout the movie. The audience is spoon fed information as memories which are very easily misremembered and leaves us to trust an untrustworthy narrator searching for purpose in a world that has stripped him of just that. In doing this, Nolan gives us a moral dilemma in which we must answer truthfully: Is the truth really worth it? And asks us personally if identity is just a story we tell ourselves
