Ritual
HAVE YOU EVER?
I didn’t really know how to review this movie.
When I first finished it, I thought it was about loneliness. Two people that are lonely that find each other, these two lost souls trying to gain perspective, and at the end of the movie they find it, right?
But it’s been a some time now and I think this movie actually made more of an impact on me than Love Exposure. Which is interesting because initially I wouldn’t arrive at that thought.
Love Exposure is a rollercoaster of emotions. This movie is just heavier. More serious. A lot more raw.
While watching it I was anticipating her death the whole time. I genuinely thought the “day of the miracle” was going to be her suicide. I thought she wanted him to come with her. And somehow instead we get a different ending.
There’s so much we don’t know. Who is the man she’s so afraid of? What happened to her before all of this? Her mother isn’t even dead. There are all these contradictions.
But it’s fine.
At the end of the day, you don’t need these things to understand the story.
Loneliness, escapism, change of perspective, gaining reality, experiencing happiness, honesty.
As soon as you start being honest with yourself, you can prosper. Lying to yourself is not gonna get you anywhere. It can only bring you deeper into that illusion.
The girl reminded me so much of M&E . We know i love a girl thats in their own world, very eccentric, intense, spontaneous etc.
But the lows are also gonna be just as deep as the highs are high.
A lot of people forget that.
Some movies I immediately love.
Others I gradually realize how important they are to me.
I think Ritual is one of those.
Why escape the thing you fear the most?
Maybe that’s not living until you die.
Maybe it’s running from living while suffering from desire.
