Saving Private Ryan
There are no words left to describe the absolute genius of Steven Spielberg: if with Schindler's List, the director recounts the Second World War from the Nazi side, with Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg recounts the conflict from the Allied perspective, avoiding, however, a eulogy to American military might, but rather describing the rawness and cruelty that war generates. The introductory sequence of the landing is probably a piece of cinematic history, comparable to Leone's duel: the choice of the hand-held camera is original, allowing us to identify with the scenes. Overall, the film is very solid, excellent in the characterizations and the battle scenes: Tom Hanks' acting must certainly be praised, as he once again delivers in the role of a commander willing to fight to return home. The influence the film had on subsequent films must also be emphasized: Fury and Inglourious Basterds are just two shining examples of the influence Saving Private Ryan had on the world of cinema.
