Moneyball
America's Pastime! Who doesn't love baseball? Me. That's who. And still, I love this movie.
If you can get me to watch an almost 2-and-a-half-hour movie about baseball, which I despise, then you're doing something incredibly right. It's your normal sports underdog story, with all of the usual tropes; the team has no money, they suck at first, they go on an improbable run, and they come up short when it matters. It's funny because it's a biopic, so it's not even like this movie is trying to follow these tropes, that's just how it turned out.
Yet, despite this seemingly obvious plot, Moneyball cultivates so much charm. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill are masterful, especially Jonah Hill. You're just sucked into rooting for his character. Then there's the dialogue. Somehow it has enough appeal to make baseball analytics sound captivating. Trust me; I've taken econometrics, and data analysis doesn't exactly cause many to jump for joy. But, this movie has such a middle-aged man sort of ethos that makes it all work.
