AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE I have not read the martian but i liked the movie, i bet that people who read the book that watched the movie liked it but felt that it was fast pace. I think that Andy Weir’s novel is so detailed that it’s simply impossible to convey that amount of detail and information from book to screen and because of that there are little things i felt that I had expansive knowledge on going in whereas the movie simply nodded to these facts. That being said i think that the acknowledgement of these things and the amount of details given were still enough for movie goers with no book knowledge to still follow along. The film feels fast but that may just be again because of how much more time the book had to expand on the details. All of that being said, the stuff the movie was able to adapt visually was SPOT ON. The scenes from page to screen were exactly how I envisioned and that just had me feeling geeked out. I loved the addition of Rocky’s perspective and how he viewed Grace and the situation. I do think they could have expanded a little bit clearer on the fact that the flashbacks were Grace slowly regaining his memories over time as opposed to making it seem like reminisces. Though it wasn’t necessary to the story and it was nodded to, I did miss Grace’s attempt at healing Rocky as oppose to Rocky healing slowly on his own ONLY BECAUSE i loved the lines in the book where Grace was like “I saved you!” and Rocky was like “No you almost killed me!” I did also enjoy the addition of Grace entering Rocky’s ship and seeing Eridian technology. I was worried they weren’t going to acknowledge the Beatles aspect in its full importance but when they finally did with the Beatles song it made me really happy. Also i think when i read the book i had a much more claustrophobic envisioning of Grace’s life on Eridia so i really liked their rendition, it made it so much more peaceful and beautiful. I also liked including a call back to earth and them receiving Grace and Rocky’s work and meeting Rocky as oppose to it happening off screen. I think they def cut down on the earth stuff quite a bit, that stuff felt like it went by fast but again, movie time vs book details. That’s also to say the same with Grace returning to save Rocky but i think that repeated explanation / realization would have been too redundant for screen so i get it. Overall though i was emotional the entire time, the visuals stunning, Ryan was all the way Ryland Grace and executed his character perfectly, Sandra Huller as Eva Stratt was perfect casting. Every emotional moment i had in the books was matched on screen. 10/10 would watch again.
