While I get that it's from the POV of an impressionable kid, I think the overall mood wasn't taking the topic serious enough. They achieved writing the Mother as unlikable as possible, but the rest was a tad to "Tom und das Erdbeermarmeladebrot mit Honig" and kitschy. The "be a man" scene was emotionally destroying.
