Happy 4 Year Anniversary, *EEAAO*! I checked this film out a few months back, but I only got about 27 minutes in before my TV just stopped working. However, even in the bit I watched I wasn’t HUGELY interested, hence why I’ve put this off for so long. So this is technically take 2!! A really overwhelming experience that’s pretty convoluted and hard to follow at times, but it’s still great fun. It took me a bit to “get it”, and I’m not even 100% sure if I DID get it. I thought the dynamic between Evelyn and Joy was fantastic and represented the themes of generational differences and attitudes brilliantly. The technical aspects are extraordinary, I have to admire it (I kept on saying to myself, “how do they do that??”). The action scenes are entertaining and it’s pretty funny too. The final 45 minutes is definitely the best and it makes me glad that I held on for that. It doesn’t always 100% work but my god when it hits it HITS. Stephanie Hsu is FABULOUS in this. Her not winning was #riggamorris The story itself blurs between “absurdist” and just straight up confusing, but i’d say it works more than it doesn’t. A fascinating, touching and visually insane film I wish I’d seen in the cinema so bad!! The Daniels are some of the most interesting people working in film today. However, I also wish I’d connected with the story itself a little more and a bit sooner. I’d love to give this film another go at some point. Overall a great film! Love to see original ideas do well critically and commercially! x

*“Mr Lugosi, why are you buying a coffin?” “I’m planning on dying soon.” * Goddddddddddddd I love this movie so much. I love movies and I love movies about people who love movies and I love movies about people who never give up no matter what!!!! It makes me feel a whole range of emotions, but mostly sheer joy and wonder!!!! I’m simply spellbound by Ed Wood and his films, and I think that this film somehow brings his films even further to life, thanks to Tim Burton’s amazing direction as well as fantastic performances from everyone. Even if it isn’t 100% accurate - as Burton himself states - I think his take on Ed Wood’s brilliantly absurd life works so much better than a standard biopic. Even though the film doesn’t detail largely on Wood’s alcoholism and tragic demise, I’m glad it doesn’t. Honestly, a biopic centred on that would’ve been simply bleak, so seeing a somewhat more lighthearted and ultimately way more sincere - but still heartbreaking, don’t get me wrong (mostly due to the devastating portrayal of fading star Bela Lugosi) - perspective on his life is a lot more interesting imo. I’ve probably already said this but it’s such an amazing, well-researched, treasured love letter to him and his craft, rather than treating him like dirt, which the poor guy already had to deal with in his own lifetime. I seriously wish there was a fandom for this movie ffs. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it, or any of Ed Wood’s films really. Also this cast is so beautiful and they’re so queer friend group ❤️❤️!!! This film is seriously becoming one of my faves of all time ughhhhh it means the WORLD to me I love it so much 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I’m conflicted but… I don’t think this was terrible. The film does a good job at making everything so incredibly uncomfortable due to the nightmarish men and general claustrophobic atmosphere itself, so fair play. A solid amount of its comedy lands, too. Plus, I’ve got to give them credits for the casting and Carey Mulligan is absolutely sickening. Also I thought this film was British, mostly because of the main backdrop. Like she was serving gal from Essex yk …!! The potential for this film was there; there’s moments where I feel like it works, such as calling out the culture surrounding accusations of rape and sexual violence. It’s a bit shallow at times, but at least there was something. It could’ve been something really, really great, it really could’ve been actually quite empowering. But it’s still… good. It’s mostly good. Not sure why the main character - who I really wanted to root for - tricked another woman into thinking she was raped for no reason, it really wasn’t necessary like 😭?? And I’m convinced that Emerald Fennell is ragebaiting me personally though because the final 15 minutes is bleak slop. Could’ve been done so much better ughhhghghggghhh!!!!!!!!! The police are not your friends!!!! Fuck off!!!!! But still, no one is more surprised than me when I say that this wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. It’s pretty good, I was never bored, and I’d still say that the good moments outweigh the bad, though the “bad” bits are pretty dreadful. Kinda crazy that Emerald Fennell went from writing this to turning a woman who was a victim of domestic abuse into a submissive who “enjoys” sends abuse… but at the same time, it’s not that surprising at all.
