Sentimental Value
“You know, I don’t believe in God at all. We came from a home where all that was irrelevant. We weren’t baptised. My sister and I had a civil confirmation just for the money. Then I had this kind of crisis. I was alone in the house again, lying in bed, crying. I know everyone lies in bed crying at some point, but… Someone said praying isn’t really talking to God. It’s acknowledging despair. To throw yourself on the ground because that’s all you can do. Not unlike heartbreak: “Call me. Please change your mind.” “Take me back.” There I was. I’d ruined everything. I was alone, lying there, crying. And then, for the first time, I sat down and prayed. It’s hard to explain. I don’t know who I prayed to, but I said it out loud: “Help me. I can’t do this. I can’t do it alone. I want a home.”
*…Because that’s all you can do, *i would say this movie left my speechless but i do have a bit to say. I live in a non-english speaking country, meaning the subtitles were most likely not going to be in english, so i decided not to watch it in the cinema, i tried watching at home but every time i got to the hour, something came up and i had to leave it. For some reason today I decided why not ask? I went and asked and the man at the counter initially told me that, no, it was not in english, but later back tracked and asked his coworker who said that it was in fact in english, so i took the chance and just went to watch it. The beginning fascinated me, but I could not figure out in what direction was the movie heading; it was just me, a woman in her late 20’s, and a man about 40 or 50 in that cinema, i can confidently say that we all left in the same emotionally state after finishing the movie. I wish i could name a specific scene that really highlights it all, but truly, this movie’s pace and the sequence in which it was placed made it perfect, it captured me, why name a perfect scene when it is all so beautifully done. On a more personal note, i felt it by chance the fact that i never managed the movie when i tried the first time, because after the first few times I had some of the worst emotional experience i’ve had in years, and something about watching this movie 2 weeks after everything that has happened made it seem like it was the perfect time to watch. I wish I could poetically describe how much this made me feel but no words can describe what I felt. Nora’s process and experiences conjoin and feel so similar to my own, yet i never felt a connection you would normally feel when you see character, i simply felt understood.
