The Odyssey
I’m gonna come back and actually say something once I sleep on it
Okay let’s talk about it. I love this movie and it’s one of the best shot and most enjoyable narratives I’ve seen. I think I was looking to nitpick it and tear it apart since it is a Nolan film. Not that I don’t respect Nolan, but I think there is a stigma around his films since he is so popular. I’d say in America he is the most well known director. Typically with that an assumption of lack of depth or actual skill comes up. Nolan stans are the worst and they display that well.
However, that being said, I’ve seen every Nolan film and I do love them. I look at Memento as one of the best structured narratives out there. Who cares how popular or mainstream he is, if he does have a pretty special skill. He’s a gateway for a lot of people to discover more and enjoy more depth in cinema, so how can I try to hate him for it?
This film was no different. I think thematically it is more simple, but as a narrative and just a true story it’s fantastic. We are so engaged with the characters even if they seem flat at times. It doesn’t matter because their few personality traits are enough to drive their journey of self discovery and quests. It’s hard to adapt a classic, and I mean a true classic, and Nolan did a great job. I’d rather him do this than The Epic of Gilgamesh, but trusting him with the odyssey took a lot of faith and it paid off well.
