A Clockwork Orange
An absolute mindfuck of a film.
I may be late to the party, but oh dear the best kind of films really are the ones that surprise you. I’m so glad I went into this without any prior knowledge of it because it left me speechless. The first bits had me questioning why everyone was so obsessed with this film until I got dragged into the rabbit hole myself. From the costumes, set design, and colour palettes, to the cyclical structures, camera direction, and THE SOUNDTRACK???? (Including the sneaky doorbell) this was such a dissectable film. Maybe I just need to see more films but I doubt I’ve ever had this much fun picking up on things everywhere watching a film, especially when elements from the first half started appearing in the second.
I could watch a million films about power, and none of them would top this. It’s all about who holds the power. The characters who are oppressed by power in the beginning, regain control throughout the film, repeating the cycle of oppression for those below them and the ones who held the initial power being oppressed by the power of the ones they once controlled…it’s honestly a reflection of how everything on earth operates. The way this film explores power dynamics and how they shape the characters’ arcs, while simultaneously mirroring that to manipulate the audience, is absolutely unmatched. Good one, kubrick. Now, I’m left wondering where to go from here. for now I’m lost. I guess it’s time for me to get cured, alright.
