The Drop
The Drop (2014)
"There are some sins you can’t go back from, no matter how hard you try.”
I'm starting like movies that begin with a quiet, almost peaceful atmosphere and then slowly build toward violence.
Bob is the reason. The way he speaks, walks, and stays silent makes him feel empty yet dangerous. Finding the puppy doesn’t soften him, it just exposes the kind of man he already is. One of my favorite characters subtly written and perfectly performed by Tom Hardy.
That said, the story could’ve been stronger. Marv’s ego and urge to reclaim respect were interesting, but his arc needed more depth. The detective subplot felt unnecessary, even though the bar itself was well written — the loyalty, the regulars, the cousin, the mob presence.
Phenomenal acting overall. I don’t understand why people dismiss this film. It’s quiet, cold, and surprisingly effective. I love this movie.
