Before Sunrise
i’ve had some friends talk about romance movies and the tropes that make them cheesy and predictable, which…… yeah a lot of blockbuster rom coms are this way (10TIHAY not included too goated) but this film, oh man this film is why romance is my favorite genre.
Why this is getting pinned on my profile:
before (heh) i talk about how much this film means to me of course i gotta glaze it. Actually wait, YOU GUYS NEED TO know that when I was watching this film for the first time in 2024 my roommate came back from a party and shitted on the floor.
So yes, the movie starts with these people having such an amazing day until well it has to end. Meanwhile, going back to me, My day starts great and I discover this movie which is one of my favorites and since all good things have to come to and end well, my roommate had to ruin it.
Find out more about that on my Superbad review.
Ethan Hawke and Julia Delpy show probably in my opinion duh the best and most honest portrayal of love and the chemistry is off the charts and so carefully crafted. conversation in the film is not treated as just talking points, they’re not rushed for pacing, it’s just there., it lingers and is so cool and abnormal in romance films, well, in like any film.
these characters really understand each other and don’t at the same time.
it’s interesting that Jesse of course completely disregards Celine’s rambles of her perspective sometimes and they both do this but well he kinda does it more LMAO. And it’s not in like a evil way, but it is because he simply doesn’t understand her version of love and because that’s realistic in conversation. People talk at each other and connect on some points but then focus too much on what they have to say. The central thing preventing there amalgamation of love is there opposing viewpoints which is why I was so intrigued when Celine literally says “you’ll never understand what this means to me”. And also of course I feel like the whole before trilogy helps me better understand how love is viewed different across genders which of course i am still very naive. And also different across countries.
anyway this film would just be meh if the performances of these two didn’t connect. Because with peak dialogue like this connection matters.
There are so many times where these characters disagree, but none of it’s judgmental. It’s just beats of silence where each character processes each others thoughts.
Dawg the way they sit there and look at each other like man i love yearning.
And of course the scenery. It’s dreamlike, which is a conflict in itself due to the fact that it won’t last.
