Chico & Rita
Imagine A Star is Born but the main characters aren’t white they’re black and latinx, the music isn’t country it’s jazz/bebop, and it’s set in Havana/New York in the 40s/50s. It deals with not just the treatment of women in the music industry, but women of colour. It tackles male suppression of emotion and all the ways this makes them fuck up. It tackles race relations, political unrest and class divides. Oh, and it’s some of the most gorgeous animation I’ve ever seen. Have I convinced you to go watch it yet?
