The Lobster
In this world, the concept of “love” is seen as a means of survival, rather than a thing that enhances our lives. As the clock comes ticking down on the time they have in the hotel, you often see the residents begin to settle. This aspect of the hotel may seem absurd, however it’s often reminiscent of how people choose partners in their real life. A man who is not married by his 40s may begin to fake and settle which draws parallels to the hotel.
the concept of love is something that cannot be forced no matter how hard a person may try. This movie shows the type of love that is genuine is one that is not forced by the rules society constructs, but rather a natural, non-forced connection.
quite possibly the best scene in this movie is when the two sets of couples are in a store reminiscent of a modern Walmart or dollar store looking at meaningless merchandise as couples. During this scene extremely suspenseful and dramatic music plays which not only was funny, but was an interesting social commentary on modern consumerism and consumerism in marriages.
The few downsides I have with this movie is that the score becomes extremely repetitive and the extremely long and unnecessary slow motion scene shown in the first hunt.
The beauty of the absurdist films is using insane concepts and ideas to draw parallels to the society that is seemingly completely normal to us.
