My Dinner with Andre
My dinner with Andre cuts right to the chase of what makes a great film, which is to depict reality accurately and without pretense - like what the film itself makes you consider.
It shows two old friends having a meal together in a New York restaurant.
Doubtless, me or anyone else has had many experiences similar to having a conversation with someone and it feeling like you understand them and understand yourself more afterwards. This is what living in reality should feel like.
The film mentions that people are too afraid to live in reality and so instead create a dream world to perceive instead. This film is not afraid of reality and embraces it, showing a 1 hour and 40 minute dinner scene of two people's reality. Films use a lot of techniques to try and make things feel more real, however most shy away from depicting reality in a form as raw as this.
My dinner with Andre leaps straight in to this reality and is not afraid of it. Conversations abruptly end when food is delivered to the table only to continue again on a slightly different path.
Getting stuck in your ways is very easy to do. Being one's self and living your reality is difficult. Experiencing good art is what I like doing with my time.
