Incendies
Denis Villeneuve is a mastermind at every single level of filmmaking. I first wanna mention how beautiful the cinematography was in this film. It was simple, and that simplicity was the reason it felt so real while watching it. They incorporate a lot of real life, events and aspects into this film to also add to the realism. Nothing about this film feels fantastical, which is really interesting when you see the path Villeneuve takes with this next films. Every character feels grounded as well, really adding to that relatability and realism.
The twist at the end is just so horrifyingly perfect. Nothing could’ve prepared me for that. I think it was the perfect reveal and perfect set-up. Good freaking job Villeneuve! He’s just a master of storytelling no matter the setting or time. I love the way he tells stories through his dialogue. There is not normally a lot of it in his films, but he does so much with it that you don’t need anymore. Even with this film being in French, I was able to understand everything that was going on and really be impacted by the story.
While the film didn’t hit me to the level that the pianist did, it was very close and is honestly about as good of a film.
