This is an absolute masterpiece of direction from David Fincher. He didn't even need to name the city for you to feel the mood; the constant rain and grit created the perfect, suffocating setting for this story.
Brad Pitt is one of my favorite actors of all time, and he excelled here, the emotion he brought to Detective Mills was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. While Mills was the more relatable character for me, Somerset was the perfect partner, and I loved the genuine relationship he developed with Tracy and Mills. It made the stakes feel so much more personal.
I also really appreciated that the film didn't rely on showing the actual killings. I’m not a huge fan of gore, and it was much more captivating and creative to see the aftermath of John Doe’s "work." It forced your imagination to do the heavy lifting.
As for the finale, it was perfect. John Doe’s plan was brilliantly thought out, even for how evil and gruesome it was. I honestly didn't expect to cry during this movie, but the performances were so masterful and the emotions were so raw in those final minutes that I couldn't help it. It’s a dark, devastating, and flawless film.
