The Lighthouse
Someone check on that man Robert Eggers, cause he be f’ed up
When you make a film with really only two actors in the whole thing you need them to really give their all, and GODDAMMMM did they. Willem DaFoe has a presence in this film that is so unsettlingly beautiful, every line he speaks is tremendous. There is one monologue in particular that is just so amazing to the point where I audibly said “DAMN.” Let’s not overlook Robert Pattinson either, because like always he is great. People commonly make fun of people calling performances great because the actor “says his line loud,” or something like that, but It’s Pattinsons duality in the film that is amazing. For most of the film he is a quiet more reserved guy, but the more he descends the more common it is for him to break and have an extremely intense emotional scene. There is one I’m thinking of where he just snaps out of nowhere. I could spend years talking about performance alone, but there is so much more of this movie we have to get through.
Then we have the Black & White aesthetic that’s just works so well with the mood/tone and even the aspect ratio, and that’s not even a stretch. This film really perfectly captures an unsettling psychological horror that keeps you engaged to a point of obsession with what you’re watching. The use of violence is used to the perfect degree as well to convey and demonstrate a descent into madness, caused by isolation and fear.
This film is just so brilliant for one that feels so small scale. I understand there is probably some real deep psychological and philosophical thing us viewers are supposed to get out of this but I just couldn’t grasp it to be honest.
