🎰 Perfectly paced for a 3 hour film. Didn’t find myself bored a single time in the film. I thought the dynamic between Ginger and De Niro’s character was great, and the way how she just wanted everything but never had enough was very frustrating to me. Many funny moments in the film (thanks to Joe Pesci) even though it was quite violent, and had a slightly new kind of storyline compared to things like GoodFellas or The Godfather - (which gave it an edge over them for me). Robert De Niro is a casino owner and I prefer bigger roles like that instead of the head of a family or a small gang - for example Has a great ending and shows that nothing can last forever without trust - which is what Robert De Niro wanted all along. Personal favourite and favourite mob film. Recommended by dad
🎭 Eyes Wide Shut is such a strange film, but I was hooked the whole time. It gets straight to the point from the first minute. It has an uneasy feeling. It’s not loud or dramatic, but more quiet and tense, which somehow makes it even more gripping. I never felt bored watching it. The mysterious atmosphere is what i usually like about these types of films. Favourite Kubrick film closely followed by the shining
🎥 One of my favourites. The dark, eerie setting is just brilliant, and like any other David lynch film, it was very confusing but that’s what makes it great, films that feel surreal or like dreams are the best in my opinion The first half is slightly better than the second half, with the tapes, the mystery man, the prison cell trick. Patricia Arquette acted both Renee and Alice very well and led both Fred and Pete on well. Ending was very nice. I like movies that confuse me and leave me with an afterthought for a while, this is a prime example. Favourite David lynch followed by mulholland dr. and blue velvet
🔫 Seen in the cinema with Rory, low expectations (b&w and in french). Completely proved wrong afterwards, as it went straight into my top 4, Being shot in black and white made it all the more gritty, realistic and to the point. The acting was extremely good and very natural, simple idea with a heavy meaning, was very very good.
🃏 Hooked from start to finish. Had high expectations but the film went far beyond them, was so addictive to watch and thought the pacing was great, had everything you could want in a film. Joaquin Phoenix is such a good actor and this is his best performance. One of my favourite films, you end up feeling bad for him and feel satisfied when he takes revenge. Don’t understand people who don’t like this film, mainly people who are a hive mind when it comes to rating films and can’t think for themselves, (may be over the top) but my opinion.
🐑 Very good film which had many moments of suspense building and a lot of exciting scenes. Film was quite predictable every time there was a major scene coming up - Hannibal escaping, Hannibal letting Clarice off and helping her with the case, Clarice’s training finally paying off and catching buffalo bill etc. I think Hannibal was a very good character and was well acted, however was slightly disappointed in the way the film ended for him.
🤫 Very sad film which is heavily impactful and I would say quite rewatchable in my opinion. Very nicely paced - second half is slightly better than the first part. Would recommend to anyone Great acting from Mads Mikkelsen Every time you are feeling bad for Lucas it just somehow gets worse, and the dog dying really just makes you sad and angry. You quickly feel very sorry for Lucas, and even with a happy ending where people forgive him, once a rumour like that is let out, people will never forget.
👹 Mia Farrow was just so much better as an actress compared to John Cassavetes, made it look like Gordon Ramsey was helping some new intern. The film started off as slightly off putting as I was not hooked, despite there being many things happening, however it all changed at around 0:50-1:00 into the film. The second half was undeniably better than the first, and the psychological breakdown for Rosemary began then - which is something I usually enjoy in a film. I think it was very well directed and had a good script however I think the characters were not explored enough beforehand. The ending was fine, not good nor bad. Would have either liked to see the baby fully or to just not know for sure about the satanic cult or the baby at all and leave the audience wondering with a cliffhanger.
🎹 Very interesting film with a lot of ups and downs, was quite slow to start but then quickly picked up. I think the way the narrator talked was great, and even though he was a criminal murderer, you quickly get to be on his side because he seems friendly. 0:20 - 1:00 was very enjoyable, comedy was mixed in nicely where they carry out their acts of ultra violence. I think there were many parts in the film that were stretched out too much - for example the prison sequence was slightly too long in my opinion and the film went downhill after that. Strange film for Kubrick to make, felt very unprofessional compared to space odyssey. Feels experimental. Ending was slightly disappointing however. Overall wasn’t the best but definitely wasn’t bad.
👞 Watched this for the first time on a ski trip, my dad's recommendation. Had pretty high expectations for it and while it's definitely great, I think I hyped it up too much in my head. Joe Pesci is great, and the shoe shine scene too. Pesci is just always good in everything he's in. Always is unpredictable and keeps you on edge. The cinematography throughout is really nice, especially the long tracking shots, and Scorsese's direction is good. There were a few stretches that dragged slightly for me, probably around the middle when it's just montages of them living the high life. Doesn't ruin the film but stops it from being absolutely perfect.
♣️ Watched this with my mum and was surprised how much I liked it. Definitely an underrated film that doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Pacino is great in it, plays it more calm and restrained than you'd expect but it works perfectly. Sean Penn is a brilliant side character, very unlikeable at times. The prison break sequence near the middle of the film was unexpected for me. The nightclub scenes have a great atmosphere to them. Story flows really well from start to finish.
📖 First hour or so (up to around 1:10) is really enjoyable and easy to watch. The diner conversation, the briefcase, the Vincent and Mia stuff. Uma Thurman and Travolta have the best story imo. Very funny throughout as well, the dialogue is effortlessly good. Only thing stopping it being a five star is the Bruce Willis story. Just didn't grab me the same way, felt like a different film dropped in the middle. Picks up again at the end but yeah, that middle section dragged a bit. Recommendation by mum. Watched in NYC
👀 Acting was good and Emma Watson was better than I expected. Nothing really stood out performance-wise though, just solid all round - however was very unoriginal. Still fun to watch. Some scenes felt a bit forced. Also felt a bit like it was written using a checklist of the usual high school love story type film - the awkward friends, the sadness, the big emotional reveal. All a bit predictable. Just wasn't my type of film as I know I am not the target audience for these types of films, but I could see why people would like it.
🔭 Visually very nice and the best or one of the best I’ve seen. But you can't give a film five stars just for looking good. Drags in places, especially the icy planet. The script is the main issue though. I think they just relied to heavily on the visuals and didn’t work too much on everything else. One of my favourite Nolan films despite the flaws.
🗑️ Watched this and genuinely struggled to stay awake. What a waste of time. The shaky camera isn't immersive or groundbreaking, this film looks like ass. Felt like I was watching someone's holiday footage from 1990. By the end I was begging for something to actually happen, but no. This is nowhere near terrifying. Terrifyingly rubbish maybe. Nothing happens for 80 minutes then the last 10 minutes is them standing in a house while the camera shakes so much you can't tell what's going on anyway. The found footage gimmick wears off after about 10 minutes and then you're stuck with unlikeable characters just arguing about nothing in a forest. One of those films where the hype does it no favours because you sit there waiting for something great and get nothing.
