I've never had a theater experience where laughter was eclipsed by silence so immediately.
This movie is such a fucking wild ride. I haven't been this unsettled by a horror movie in a hot minute. What's crazy to me is that if I were to try to explain the plot to a friend, I believe that nothing about what I would say would sound inherently scary. That said, holy shit I was geeking.
However, I found that the structure of the film did cause it to lose some of the narrative momentum by the end. I can understand the complaint that the film's advertising painted this as much more of a serious thriller rooted in a neighborhood's paranoia. That said, I've been reminded time and again to not expect anything straightforward from Zach Cregger.
Personally, this ticked a lot of boxes for me, I'm a sucker for horror/thrillers set in suburbia and this felt like a mashup of IT and Prisoners. At times it did feel like a sketch comedy, but that contributed to this film's unique narrative fingerprint.
