This is somehow the most batshit crazy movie I’ve possibly ever seen, maybe even crazier than Marty Supreme, yet somehow my only complaint is that it wasn’t even more crazy.
The movie opens strongly, with the classic real life situation of a middle aged woman being tossed aside in the workforce. For a comedy, the movie still manages to make you empathize with Linda.
Although I can see why people hate on the plane crash scene, I personally found it extremely entertaining—shutting the window cover to the man hanging outside of the plane, etc.
I think Rachel & Dylan had amazing chemistry as actors in this film, bringing a unique energy to the film. On that note, Rachel McAdams acting was actually phenomenal in every aspect of this movie, and she managed to play a dorky & lonely woman, a survivalist, and a psycho, seamlessly.
I think the movie did a good job at progressing Linda and Bradley’s relationship, however it definitely would have been interesting if the writers had leaned more into the possible romantic side of their relationship, it felt like they were edging us with that the entire time.
Although I can see why people disliked the pacing, personally I didn’t mind it, in fact I thought that the pacing felt appropriate and realistically tied to the events unfolding.
I am so grateful to the fact that they decided to make this movie lean more into a darker side, because watching Linda fall into almost complete insanity was extremely satisfying and entertaining. In a way, I think they could have gone even darker with her character, but, that likely would have distorted both the purpose and message of her character and place in the movie, so I do think that the level of darkness they went to was appropriate and suitable.
I can’t even put into words how hard this movie made me laugh so many times, but a few examples of my favorite scenes were,
• Linda stabbing Donovan with a fork in the plane, and then watching him fly out of the plane.
• Linda’s brutal and hilarious encounter with the boar, f*cking decapitating it.
• Linda murdering Bradley’s fiancé on the cliff top.
• Bradley sticking his finger into Linda’s eye. The way you can see Linda’s eye compressing might be the most ridiculous and yet hilarious thing I have ever seen in a movie.
Also, the fact that Linda ends up winning at the end of the film, might make this one of the most satisfying movie endings I’ve ever seen. Linda is a f*cking badass.
The only things I would change about this movie is possibly the part when Bradley’s fiancé comes to the island, I mean sure she can be looking for her fiancé, but why would she be going out there? Lazy writing. I would also probably change the fact that there was a random huge mansion, something about the idea of the island being completely desolate made it seem scarier.
Overall I love this stupid, ridiculous, funny, and amazing movie.
