Solaris
Tarkovsky always blows me away, he is the most genius visual poet I’ve ever seen, what a flooring and meditative experience Solaris is, from the use of water symbolisation and the long brooding shots he emphasises and forces upon the viewer is just incredible and allows you to completely soak yourself into the film. Man the beginning earth act is brilliant in itself.
Upon watching this it’s now very obvious to me that Tarkovsky always questions the many faces of human consciousness, pain and despair and is able to transfigure all these philosophical ideas and turn it into into a visual art piece like in Solaris and Stalker.
The planet itself has become a physical and literal metaphor, haunting the members of the ship forcing them to face their unaddressed and unresolved traumas, Hari, Kris’s late wife appears, the women who he neglected and she ultimately suicided, Kris spends most of his time absorbed by her trying to make things right again so he’s no longer haunted by the decisions of his neglect.
There is a lot more to the film than just this but I need time to reflect and think throughly of the film because it’s packed with so many layers. Tarkovsky might be my new favourite director.
