A Clockwork Orange
it’s hard to “like” this movie in the usual sense. you endure it. you watch, half-hypnotized, as stylized violence unfolds like theater.
Kubrick isn’t glorifying violence exactly, but he’s not condemning it either. he’s more interested in what happens when institutions try to fix deviance by becoming even more deviant. free will becomes a curse. rehabilitation looks a lot like torture. society is just another kind of gang, dressed in lab coats instead of masks.
it’s a brilliant, ice-cold film. razor-sharp, visually stunning, emotionally void. a satire so bleak it starts to feel like a confession.
im glad I saw it. i think it’s important. but if a man tells me this is his favorite movie, I will be slowly and silently putting on my coat. not because he’s wrong, but because I don’t want to find out why.
