Funny Games
“Why don't you just kill us?”
*
“Don't forget the entertainment value. We'd all be deprived of our pleasure.”*
Everything I’d want to say about Funny Games risks spoiling the point — which is kind of the point. A brutal little “fuck you” to our appetite for screen violence, forcing you to ask why you pressed play at all.
Haneke drains the genre of its usual pleasures and uses the fourth wall not as a gimmick, but as a trap. No, it’s not condescending — you just don’t like the message.
The blankness is deliberate, the cruelty pointedly un-cathartic, and you end up an unwilling participant. Cold, controlled, and kind of brilliant.
