Queer
BFI LFF #5
what the fuck…??? my brain is literally short-circuiting while i try to write this review. all i can say for sure is that some of y'all are going to absolutely despise this film; its fucking weird, especially if you’re a stranger to surrealism and came in expecting a cute queer love story (like i did by bringing along my literal 15-year-old sister, my mom is going to annihilate me for letting her see this). PSA: this is not for a mainstream audience. this is a deeply personal trip start to finish through the mind of one brilliant and bat shit crazy director who has reached the point in his career where he can and should do whatever the fuck he wants. im dying to see the missing hour from the directors cut.
there is no doubt about it; this is probably the most ambitious thing luca has ever done. this is also an insane departure from Challengers and Call Me By Your Name, even making Bones and All seem tame in comparison. this one was definitely for the Suspiria stans. this is also the best ive ever seen daniel craig. wow. give that man a fucking oscar!!! he took that character and fucking ran with it. drew starkey, though in a more subtle role, also rocked this. this is one of the best and most unexpected on-screen duos ive seen in a very, very long time. kudos to that.
the cinematography is an absolute dream (literally). the score, the soundtrack, the sets?? costumes??? wow. in awe. the plot gets lost in the sauce sometimes but i really was okay with that. this wasn’t a film so much as it was an out-of-body experience.
what starts out as a not-so-typical romance story on the surface devolves into something so much more terrifying, raw, and dream-like. i have so much more to say but i really dont want to spoil it. lynch fans, this one is for us!!!
