Star Wars
Yes, I saw Star Wars for the first time at the ripe age of 24 — on the original 1977 release print at BFI’s Film on Film Festival, no less. Real fans probably hate me. That’s fair.
For most of my life, I wrote this off as a movie for boys who made lightsaber sounds with their mouths. We watched it in class once back in middle school and I distinctly remember falling asleep within 15 minutes. Never gave it another shot — partly out of pride, partly because I thought I was above it.
Turns out I was wrong. The whole damsel-rescue arc is tired, and the moral binaries are hilariously blunt (evil is black, good is beige), but somehow none of that matters. It’s genuinely magical. The sound, the design, the pacing — it all just moves, like it was built to hijack your brain. Watching it in its original format made it feel like an actual cultural event, not just a franchise.
Anyway, I think I’m a Star Wars girl now. Please do not quiz me on lore. Also — Harrison Ford, I’m single.
