Ran
Absolute cinema.
I put this on the highest shelf, right next to Eyes Wide Shut. An experienced and already legendary director using all his skill to craft a masterpiece. Not a scratch on Kurosawa's blade, totally in command of the medium. This felt like it reinvented color and framing. The verticality of it. Taking full advantage of the landscape. What felt like a cool idea for a shot at the end of Seven Samurai, now the central thought behind this film's look. Stunning.
It does loose its pace a little in the second half, but in the face of what it gets right it didn't bother me at all.
