Arrival
I don’t know quite how he does it, but Denis Villeneuve is so good at building suspense. On top of that as far as I have seen he always delivers an ending that is worth the build up. I do think it’s interesting how he takes something like language which is often viewed as a barrier between humans, and turns it into a means of bringing humans together. It does seem like humans have such a categorical way of thinking that can often be limiting in the way we think of other humans, or even ourselves. I feel like breaking down the barriers of language is just one way in which Denis Villanueve breaks down that way of thinking in this film. The idea to intertwine time and language is such a unique idea, that honestly could easily fall flat, however it does not.
