Princess Mononoke
I honestly think this might be the best animated film that I have seen. The story is just so rich with detail and depth. However, the thing about a Miyazaki film that really sets it apart from other stories is his depth and world-building. I can't even begin to understand how someone can create these worlds that feel like they are overflowing with history and culture that is both unique to each story, while also feeling like each one could take place in the same world. This felt like my Neighbor Totoro on steroids. I do have to say that this film's story pacing and characters felt a little reminiscent of the Disney golden age, which would make sense given the year it was released. The most valuable lesson that I personally took from this is that no matter what side you are on, hate is not the answer. Which is crazy because this film is almost 30 years old, and it is not just applicable to today, but I would say an integral lesson that the world will hopefully learn.
