Collateral
I started this miniseries with my Dad as it had been put onto Netflix & Carey Mulligan is arguably one of my favourite modern actors.
The whole story is very interesting, with some of the most interesting characters I’ve seen in a mini series for a while. It sadly seems to juggle too many themes to really make a hard hitting impact.
The cinematography is something that struck me early on (in the first 2 episodes especially). The long takes, especially during arguments, make you feel like you’re there. I thought some of the jarring editing techniques were really interesting & effective to show the mindset of Jeany Spark’s character!
I recently read an article which talked about the type of roles for women in the industry; the need for characters who are unapologetic and complex, I think this is one thing Collateral does brilliantly. Carey Mulligan, Jeany Spark & Billie Piper’s characters all fit that bill and must have leapt of the page! I just wished I saw more of Piper! John Simm’s character was one I wanted more from, despite him having some great scenes to work with!
Overall this was exiting & interesting but could have been fleshed out for another 2 episodes to really get more from it’s characters & have the impact I imagine it had intended!
