Carrie
Carrie is a very full movie. there's so much packed in these 98 minutes from the literal to the subtextual. DePalma does an amazing job at making it all flow beautifully and never feel overbearing. he executes everything so perfectly that it hits just all the right spots so hard.
i knew virtually the entire plot to this before i saw it because it's a classic and everything and i was amazed to find that i was still struck with so much emotion. when Carrie and Tommy are dancing together and spinning at the prom after they kiss i was almost brought to tears it touched me so deeply to see Carrie so happy in that moment even though i was well aware as to what was soon to transpire. they were genuinely so happy together that it made me forget about what was to come and that made the famous pig blood scene hit so much harder when it happened.
DePalma's directing was just so amazing, especially during the prom scene. every emotional beat was hit so perfectly. i was brought on a journey of happiness to suspense to utter fear that a horror movie hasn't made me feel in quite some time. the editing techniques when Carrie's murderous rage was really well-done and i can't imagine what it looked like to people in the 70's.
my favorite aspect of the film has to be the scenes of religious abuse. Spacek and Laurie act so well together and Carrie's mother's incessant abuse of God was really powerful. all of the Jesus symbols worked really well and Carrie's punishment closet scenes were really emotional (especially the first one where she's shoved into it. the acting was phenomenal). the religious abuse presented in the film reminded me a lot of one of my favorite stories, "Flowers in the Attic". really struck me deeply and the first confrontation between Carrie and her mother is probably my favorite scene from the movie.
shoutout to John Travolta for playing my favorite character, Billy Nolan. Billy was so goofy i loved whenever he was on screen. when he was getting a bj from Chris and she ended up talking about how much she hated Carrie made me genuinely laugh out loud. pretty much everytime he spoke got a laugh out of me and i really needed it because of all the negative emotions that DePalma was slapping in my face 87 times a minute were doing to me.
Carrie is a powerful and emotional film that i'm gonna love for a long time. all those little bastards deserved everything that came to them...EXCEPT TOMMY!! THATS MY ONE COMPLAINT! TOMMY WAS SO INNOCENT!! he genuinely cared about and enjoyed Carrie and their time at the prom. sure, his motivations weren't pure but it was clear that he had changed his mind about her and really did like her. you could see it in his reaction when she got the blood poured on her head. he was pissed and rightfully so! Tommy was an innocent in the whole affair and i think it's a DAMN SHAME what happened to him! #JusticeForTommy
