It Follows

I have been putting off watching this movie for a long time, mostly because from what I knew of it, it seemed like an uninspired basic 2010s horror flick… but boy was I wrong. From the second this film started and the insane SCORE set in, I knew I was gonna love this movie. The story and mystery of the film is something to admire, how illogical and dreamlike this movie is. With all of its weather and season changes, and ambiguous decisions from characters, that you don’t know if they actually carried out or not. I love the slow burn scares that mostly don’t rely on cheap jumpscares (but sometimes they do😭). Again with the score, it is literally unlike any movie soundtrack I’ve ever heard, reminding me of old 80s horror flicks, but with a more modern and refined artistic craft. The cinematography is mostly amazing, but boy please get a gimbal or steadicam or something 😭. The handycam effect works effectively a lot, but when it’s the setup for the climax of the movie, and the camera is just shaking all over the actors facing, it doesn’t work for me. Lastly, I recently was introduced to Maika Monroe in Longlgs, and she is even better in this. Her scared and disturbed acting really cements her as a modern horror icon. Overall really fun and effective film.
