Hell Drivers
I’m pretty much the most mixed on this you could possibly be. A British truck driving noir that’s meant to provide some class commentary, it just feels quite spread out for what it ends up delivering. There is a clear point to comment and expose this destructive masculine behavior that’s only kindled by circumstance, unable to even press the brake momentarily on these self-destructive tendencies as they only deem themselves worthy of this way of life. Most of that impactful ideology I thought got kind of lost in the shuffle here, despite eventually getting some quality dialogue no characters really had a scrap of detail to them. I thought most of the actual driving scenes were pretty fun especially putting yourself into the 1950s mindset, you just get long spells of them doing their runs and trying to engage in this pissing contest that puts mainly others at risk. It ends pretty strong with emphasizing this but I wasn’t put in a position to feel anything towards those few remaining characters when it should have been devastating.
The black and white restoration looked really good and the chase sequences had to have inspired some of the road action that would come in the next decades, pieces just never really clicked for me.
