Columbus
the story of a young girl eager for knowledge but not ready to break away from the place she’s called home. raising her former addict mother & herself casey clutches to jin as a friend & a confident, teaching him architecture, something he despised as a young man. jin’s estranged and dying father was an architect based in columbus, an architectural hub, and by learning from casey he’s able to connect with his father. they form an odd relationship, the line between friends & lovers is blurry but they also are mentors to each other in their own ways. there’s something really beautiful & innocent about it.
this film is beautifully shot, scenes bouncing back & forth between jin & casey living similar lives & experiences. the symmetry of the shots plays back into the heavy architectural undertones of the movie, with balance & light playing a huge role in every cut. the happier scenes have elements like windows, in groups of four, the sadder in groups of three, creating an additional visual element to the film. each shot of the homes are intentional with pieces from both jin’s life & caseys seen throughout. the ambient, almost silent score of the film makes everything so peaceful, similar to what i imagine columbus to be. all of these things combined creates a nostalgic feeling & weirdly after watching this it feels as if i’ve been there myself.
