The series uses gangsters and historical events as a narrative engine to tell a much deeper story: the tragedy of the Darmodys and their creator, Nucky Thompson. It’s a tragedy about the cycle of violence, adaptation, greed, ambition, identity, and the ways people become trapped by their own choices. The ending is one of the best I’ve seen in television. The cycle finally closes with Nucky’s death at the hands of Tommy Darmody, the last one standing. Perhaps Nucky realizes the truth in that final look, but it’s too late. His first sin has finally come back to him. He had a chance at redemption, and he lost it. He didn’t save Gillian. Plus: Gillian Darmody is one of the most complex and misunderstood figures i've seen in television. Such an underrated freudian character that embodies the best and first anti-heroin in the history of TV. My Top 10 Characters: 1. Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson 2. Gillian Darmody 3. James 'Jimmy' Darmody 4.
