Gaea Girls
From what I recently learned from clips and a video essay I watched. I couldn't help but wonder how Saika Takeuchi is doing in life (like is she alive?). I will watch this but begrudgingly because of how infuriating her treatment was. I did watch her debut match where you could see Chigusa tearing up at the end so who knows what kind of baggage was going on behind the scenes. If I was hypothetically a trainer my mindset would be to instill toughness from a mutual standpoint, aka learning how to fight back, or perform aggression etc (not one sided punishment). I don't know what kind of mentality Saika had during that time but she didn't seem to carry a lot of vengeance or violence in her heart. She seemed rather driven by what she saw on television growing up. I'd assume. Wtf kind of moron training is it to take blows to the head when you are starting out new? So I wouldn't be surprised if that caused Saika to have a shortened career. I hope she walked away a stronger person. The world of Japanese Pro-Wrestling is fascinating.
Edit: I should give the trainers more leeway now that I have finished this documentary on 02/25/2024. The treatment towards Saika is more out of the frustration of her not being ready for pro-wrestling. When the trainers are being strict with her she doesn't want to take failure for an answer, when she crumbles under the pressure, she even begs for chances. Saika is definitely held back by her lack of tenacity (or too much depending on how you want to look at it) and wrestling moves skill set and this is probably due to her age and size. She should be proud being athletically talented and not being someone who ran away from the gym. Chigusa is what I would call an alpha woman at least in the domain of the wrestling ring and in spaces where women preside. I didn't despise her like I thought I would. The noodle chute scene is adorable and I found myself attracted to Meiko Satomura in this documentary I don't know why. You could feel a sisterhood between some of the women at this gym. The training was legit as in hard. If Saika is still alive I can totally understand wanting to leave this part of your life in the past.
