Rear Window
I think this might be THE Alfred Hitchcock movie. What makes it so extraordinary isn’t just the premise, but the execution.
Hitchcock uses a single apartment with one perspective and yet it feels more gripping than most films with one setting. The performances are perfect, especially James Stewart, who carries the film with a quiet, intensity that pulls you into his viewpoint.
Visually, it’s perfect. Every window tells a story and therefore every movement matters. Few films make you so aware of your own role as a viewer. If anyone ever asks what Hitchcock is all about, this may be the answer, I guess time will tell.
“We’ve become a race of Peeping Toms.”
