Funny Games
no, my heart bpm definitely didn't spike up to 115 after watching this.
what makes this movie so scary for me is the fact that they include you in the movie. they make it feel like you want this to happen. it turns the act of something as simple as watching into something so uncomfortable you feel punished watching it.
it simply denies you catharsis on purpose. most horror movies follow a pattern of "tension -> suffering -> and of course, escape or justice", but funny games refuses to follow that. just when i thought everything was over and i was about to take a sigh of relief, that fucking rewind scene took it away in the worst way possible.
i absolutely loved the shots in this movie. the fact that most of the violence occurs not even on the frame makes your mind fill in the gaps it never needed to fill. the long static shots, the silence instead of music playing, and the painfully slow pacing of shots.
and i hate the fact that we don't know anything about the antagonists. heck, you don't even know their real names. you can't build a backstory and by constantly changing names, it removes their individuality.
LONG STORY SHORT: I FEEL UNSAFE IN MY OWN HOME
