Queer
luca guadagnino the girlboss you are…i’m gonna try to write this review as comprehensively as i can, but english is in fact my second language, so pls forgive me if i don’t make too much sense: what im gonna talk about is a bit philosophical and i struggle to make myself even semi-understandable when it comes to things like this when im not talking in spanish.
this movie was really thought-provoking. one of the main things i thought of while watching it, and what i found most interesting about the movie, was how it treated the idea of (mainly physical) intimacy and how we experience it. this is something i think a lot about, not necessarily in the sexual/romantic sense, but i guess it’s easiest to put what i want to say into words if we think of it in this context, so i’ll be focusing on this perspective of it to explain my thoughts. when talking about (physical) intimacy in this kind of relationship, i especially tend to think about how involuntarily bodies seem to move and act in the right setting when they feel comfortable enough to. to put it into simpler words: how fully your body takes the lead instead of your mind during “real” intimacy.
i think it’s really cool? (i don’t exactly want to use that word but i can’t think of anything else) that you can do something or move in a certain way without even realizing that you’re doing so, until you look back and realize you did. i’m not sure how to translate this into english, but its such a (nearly) entirely body-centric, sensitive experience, that i think it’s a bit impossible to not find it fascinating, or at least a bit interesting, especially in our very mind-obsessed, rationalist society. for this reason i think i also understand why people often get so hung-up on old relationships (sexual or not). i might be way off base here and totally misreading the movie, but Queer illustrates this really well.
feeling genuinely connected to a person is i believe, nearly always an inherently bodily experience, and i think our species-wide obsession with “love” and romantic relationships definitely stems from this. in our actuality, there’s very little, truly body-centric situations left that we can go through. and i don’t mean body-centric in the sense where your body is physically the star of the show (eg exercise), but in the sense that your mind itself takes the backseat almost entirely, and your actions become nearly just your body’s. i think that’s something we can’t really get anywhere else other than in physically intimate relationships, at least not anymore. obviously whether or not you agree with this entirely depends on if you subscribe to dualism, but this is my letterboxd and i can say what i want!!!
i really liked Queer, because even though there’s obviously a lot of movies that touch on the subject of people having a lasting (often sexual, or at least sexually-charged) effect on each other (just look at call me by your name lol), i haven’t really seen a movie apart from this one that actually explores the entire physical aspect of it so well without taking the purely sexual and overly explicit route, which is something i enjoyed and found very new. this movie takes depicting #yearning to another level lowk.
apart from all the bullshit i just spewed, this movie also has really beautiful stills!!! i took photos of like a billion different shots.
in conclusion great movie, idk why it took me so long to watch it, would recommend x
