Squid Game
It's a good series, it fully fulfills the purpose of entertaining and generating a hook so that one wants to continue watching it, but it wastes a lot the potential it was creating while the secrets of the plot are revealed, and this entertainment is contradicted by the acid criticism that could be obtained, as it normalizes and relativizes it too much.
And due to the fact that it is a globally watched and acclaimed series, I find it more useful to acknowledge that I did not like things about the series.
My biggest criticism falls on the revelation of the ending, the why of the games, the intention in their creation. I consider it something "offensive" for the intelligence of the viewer, I think they were scared to really criticize capitalism in a structural way and decided to go down a very simple and harmless path. It is extremely simplistic or reductionist, almost childish in its development.
The rich people or the bourgeois class are not bad because they have evil desires for blood or violence, but there is an accumulation of wealth at the cost of the exploitation of the workers. From there one can understand the patterns of violence, such as wars, or the excesses in the industrialization of non-renewable energies, which are basically encouraged by the claims of finance capital, or the means of production, such as useful land for their exploitation, or uncontrollably increasing production, more efficiently in economic terms, but not more sustainable or effective in the long term. Violence would be almost inevitable in view of the changes in power.
The fact that this series is based on an anti-capitalist reduction does not exempt it from continuing to be a critical misrepresentation, since it glorifies those situations of a capitalist society, it accepts them because it supposes that the public wants to see that, when it is a product wanting to pass itself off as anti-capitalist. It is a product that has fun in the mechanics of capitalism, which despite the cruelty that could be supposed develops as something "funny", as if reality were not enough with its cruelty, everything is more exaggerated and this causes it to look like a cartoon, but a bad cartoon. The message is lost and degenerates more and more.
There are characters that I do not like, such as Ali, whom I consider very one-dimensional, and is a character that the creators made exaggeratedly good morally, and his credulity and innocence ends up causing some pity for this character. Empathy for the characters is not built by how good morally they are, but by their good development and character, to understand them as a credible person and not a caricature, who makes decisions as a real person would or who has the attributes of one. In addition, characters who are more collaborative and less competitive are punished, since they end up being unsuspecting and "denatured" in the essence of the universe of these games, and in this way an indirect criticism is made of these social community options. Which I consider dangerous to naturalize said savage competition.
