This movie is unrelentingly bleak. This bleakness is served phenomenally by the performances of Hoffman, and Finney, who's character's are undoubtedly the best part of the film. However, it's hampered by some issues. The non-linear storytelling might have worked in some other sequence, but ultimately it felt unnecessary, and disruptive to the pacing. I also felt that that editing and color grading were abrasive at times. Once the story stops skipping around as much, it really improves. By the third act, the downward spiral that the characters create for themselves is really engrossing in a "can't look away" sort of way. It didn't live up to my expectations of "The last Sidney Lumet movie, and his first collaboration with PSH," but it still exists as an interesting modern noir movie with some great performances. Side note, it's unreal how hot Marisa Tomei is in this movie, I actually thought it was a different actress for most of the runtime because I didn't think she could be that much of knockout at 43, god damn.

I was skeptical of this movie, and it's ability to adapt the odyssey in a compelling way, but I think I was mostly wrong. The costumes and dialog served this kind of reimagining perfectly well (for the most part, I'm looking at you spiderman). It also added a lot of really interesting subtext that reframes a lot of Odysseus' journey, and the conflict in Ithica. My issue with this movie is mostly (and maybe unfairly) based in my indifference to Christopher Nolan as a director. The editing was never great, and sometimes bad, the pacing in the first act was not good, and I thought that the cast was too star studded, with lots of underwhelming or out of place performances. Also, and this will probably change on rewatch, but I wasn't especially blown away by the score or cinematography. I think this is a movie that I will like more the more I watch it, but this time I thought it was good, not great.

Chris Pontius has an unusual tip to shaft ratio

Points for having baddie alcoholic space trailer Supergirl, but the pacing is pretty ass, it doesn't look very good, it's dark as fuck, and barely any of the story beats feel earned at all.
